Darfur campaign cuts Sudan money

There is an active effort to put pressure on Sudan over its policies in Darfur which is exemplified by California’s passing laws limiting investment with Sudan’s government.

I have always been concerned that sanctions end up punishing the people who most need help but this effort to reduce investment in Sudan - investment that never finds its way to the people - is worthwhile.
Governor Schwarzenegger of California signed the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act last week; the bill requires the state’s pension funds to sell their investments in companies trading with Sudan. The Governor urged President Bush to follow the same path.

“With a stroke of your pen, you can do far more than any one state to ease the suffering of millions in this war-torn region,” he wrote.

  1. If I had any capital to invest I\’d make bloody certain none of it went into the genocide industry.

Efforts like Schwartzenegger\’s are meant to focus pressure on the criminals who go by the name of \”the Sudanese Government\” That\’s all fine but the pressure point should be closer to other villains of this genocide : the Chinese. It is their genocide for oil policy that is the engine behind the Darfur atrocity.

We were all accomplices to the Rwanda\’s mass murder. Now, with our reliable passivity, the west and the UN are enabling a repeat performance in Africa.

Let\’s get the obligatory condemnation out of the way and then maybe get on with calling the Chinese out on this one: It is Bush\’s fault.

It is Bush\’s fault. He\’s such an absorbing target for our moral outrage that he exhausts us. We seemingly have no more invective to spend on these genocidal ghouls.

And it is Bush\’s fault for foreclosing every other energy market the oil thirsty Chinese attempt to tap. If Bush\’s America had sold the Chinese the oil reserves they bid for last year then maybe Bejing wouldn\’t have turned to paying and protecting Sudan\’s mass murderers just to secure a portion of the sovereign energy security the Chinese know they must have.

Ok,some of the more imaginative of you will come up with other and even better explanations of Bush\’s fault for this one. I agree and share your logic. His core guilt is hereby stipulated.

Now, can we have a look around to see if there are other forces that might deserve some of our collective and corrective criticism? On this one and on the NorK\’s Nuke, it isn\’t hard to detect that China is line for some chastising pressure that may eventually save a Darfurian\’s hide.
