Perhaps the brightest source of hope are the many "citizen journalists" blogging as tiny lights of freedom, and perhaps helping to expose and even mitigate human rights abuses. Putin has done the only thing he could do and contained the glee to the few who truly know how to enjoy it. He has learned well from Bush; taking care of your cronies is paramount and squashing dissent through the promise of death and media shrinkage is the only way.
