A few facts from the Oktoberfest
Posted October 3, 2007 on 2:18 am | In the category Germany, Uncategorized | by Mackenzie Brothers It rained a bit during the week in Munich so when the sun came out on Saturday morning, the crowds were chomping at their bit to get to the action of the Oktoberfest. There are no records kept for such feats but long-term observers think that the mass spurt to the beer tents reached Olympian heights on this glorious Bavarian morning. At 9:00 the gates were opened and the assembled crowds poured into the Bavarian heaven. At 9:04 the police declared that the Löwenbräu tent, a gigantic piece of canvas occupied by a brass band and thousands of customers, was full and the doors were closed. Police could not explain how so many people could sprint across the open space and pour into the tent in only 4 minutes, aber so war es!.
Otherwise it has been a relatively normal Fest. On Saturday 600,000 people showed up, during the week 200,000 Italian tourist made the journey north, dramatically reversing the usual trend, 3,4 million liters of beer were drunk, 200,000 more than last year, you don’t want to know how many oxen ended up on the barbecue, 3921 patients had to be treated by the Red Cross, and 14 pickpockets were arrested. Mensch, was willst du noch mehr?

Here in Oregon, We celebrate Octoberfest as well (althought it occurs in late September). Mt. Angel plays host to an Annual Octoberfest that draws in huge crowds (not 600,000 people, but…). Authentic Bavarian food and beer (Spaten and Paulaner on tap) are served and kitzich German “oompapa” music can be heard from the Festhalle(s). Mt. Angel is itself modeled after a Bavarian Alpen village (a la Americano), although I doubt a Bavarian would find the decor pleasing to the eye. If you can’t get to Munich, then the Mt. Angel one is a great alternative. Unlike Vancouver B.C,. we can sell real beer in Oregon, ie: Paulaner,Spaten etc… PROST!

To make sure that Vancouver, B.C. receives fair representation and doesn’t seem like the igloo-covered hinterland that southerners continue to believe it to be, I would like to note that both Paulaner Salvator and Paulaner Heffe Weissbier are available here (although Paulaner Märzen and the rest of the Paulaner family continue to elude us). One added advantage, however, of living in the Great White North is that when the occasion comes for us to visit our Oregonian brethren, our dollar buys more of that good Paulaner brew than does the local Bush-devalued variety.
