Jeff, I agree with you on what you have said in your blog. I'm assuming you've seen the recent documentary entitled Why we Fight, which addresses the very issues you bring up. That anti-war song from the Vietnam era "what is war good for?" (absolultley nothing) is total wrong. War is good for making rich people more rich and weapons more effective. What brought Germany out of its post WW1 depression? Re-armanent (thanks to the national socialist democaractic workers party). What brought America out of the depression? WW2 did (ie:re-armament). Let's face it War is Big Business. Before Bismark unified Germany in the 19th Century, Germany was composed of many self-sificient States. One of the poorest was Hesse-Kassel. In order for her to survive econmically, she would hire her armies out to other nations to fight all over the known world. For,example Great Britain hired Hessian troops to fight in the American revolutionary war. The money she got from hiring out her armies, would in turn allow her to produce more weapons and train more soldiers. At its peak, Hesse-Kassel had a greater soldier to civilian ration, than even mighty Prussia. This is the Industrial Military complex at its most basic level. The United States emerged from WW2 as one of the strongest countries in the World, perhaps THE strongest. Thus, she felt it was Her duty to "police" The World and free it from the yoke of Communism. "Policing" The World does not come cheaply. What Eisenhower warned against in his farwell speech had become reality. Whether we like it or not America has become a Military, Industrial Complex.
