I would like to hear mainstream media commentators reflect on the Bush ‘new’ strategy’s being in fact nothing new. It’s the same, only more: more troops being sent because of the continuing belief that a military victory can occur. I’ve seen two of Bush’s recent interviews in which neither interviewer asked him specifically about the Baker Report’s recommendations for a truly new approach, including diplomatic overtures to Iraq’s neighboring countries. I’ve heard the Bush argument against doing this, but perhaps in this context – his offer of a ‘new’ strategy – an interviewer’s pointing out that the Bush proposal is not new and asking about new diplomatic efforts, a different answer might be elicited.
